Carbon Tec Canoe Durability compared to Wenonah and Mad River kevlars

Q.  How tough are Souris River Canoes in general and especially the Carbon Tec models.  How do they compare to Wenonah's kevlar canoes and Mad River's models?  I will be paddling in slow moving rivers that will have some obstacles, mostly rocks and hitting them or dragging over them is inevitable from time to time. I'm intrigued by your flexible hull system.  I may also be interested in wood trim.  How much does it cost and what is the added weight to the canoe?

Also, how much does it cost to get a canoe shipped from Canada to Georgia?

Thanks.

Jim

A.  Keith forwarded your email to us because we are the US dealership and handle shipping from here.  Shipping from Canada is expensive and more difficult.   A Carbon Tec Quetico 17 will take some abuse like hitting rocks or scraping bottom just fine.  If you are hitting lots of rocks repeatedly (it doesn't sound as though you are), you would be better off in a Royalex canoe.  The Souris River will scratch flex at the point of impact with an obstacle, which tends to save the canoe hull unlike  Wenonahs and Mad River kevlars which won't even compare in durability to the Souris River.  Neither of those two canoes can flex when they need to flex and you will experience more significant damage when hitting rocks.  Also, repairing those other vinylester resin kevlar canoes can be more difficult because they use vinylester resin instead of  epoxy resin like Souris River.  It's cheaper for the builder and much weaker for the user.

Inside of any standard Souris River Canoe are two, fixed,  Ash-laminate frame, web seats and anodized aluminum gunwales and thwarts - black or gold color  for a carbon tec.  Options like a bow-seat slider, wood  gunwales and thwarts cost  extra and add weight to the canoe, not to mention a maintenance factor on the gunwales.  I would not recommend wood trim unless you like to tinker with stuff and weight is not a factor.  Cost for wood trim is $260 extra and does add 8 lbs. of weight to the canoe.

Crating and shipping to Georgia will cost about $200-250.
