Fixing Scratches in a Souris River Canoe
Q. Yes! I scratched one of the
canoes. My wife said not to worry about being seen in public with a scratched canoe because we have
two spares that are OK.
So, what is better, the resin treatment or the spar varnish? I want to fix the thing right away so
no one comments on how stupid I was.
Although, the real gung ho canoeists down here think I am cool because I must be a white water guy
to have scratched up the canoe like that. I am sort of enjoying the notoriety associated with being
considered a white water guy! People are asking us to boundary waters dinners. Maybe I shouldn't
fix it????
Thanks. I hope all is well with you!

A. Mark-
I think the varnish will do a better job getting rid of the scratch and it a bit easier to work
with. If it's just one long scratch, I'd dunk a Q-tip or end of a rag and just apply it to the
scratch as opposed to varnishing the whole canoe just yet. For myself personally, I wouldn't even
worry about it. There'll be many more where that came from and then you can do the whole canoe in
one step at that time. Hang on to that "whitewater" notoriety! It could be gone before you know
it! Scratch-fame can be fleeting.
Or, a second thought would be to drive around town with an unscratched one on the car (to hide the
shame) and to actually use the scratched one when no one is looking. I hear "living in the closet"
is a tough life, but we could keep that scratch our little secret. Now you know which canoe is
your's too! Scratches do have their benefits.
On the other hand, if you want us to send out some varnish , give us a call with your CC# and
details. We always keep it in stock. 1-800-280-1078
