Refinishing a Souris River Canoe
Q. I certainly enjoyed my purchase of the Quetico 17 this past June. Thanks, it's been great fun. While you gave me explicit directions in regards to sanding and refinishing, I didn't make notes and need to be refreshed. The canoe is a carbon tech with a black finish / gold trim. I did purchase the Interlux 333 Brushing Liquid and the Goldspar High Gloss Polyurethane Varnish from you as well, but don't remember what grade of sand paper to use or the application process of the above materials.
Sure would appreciate your direction once again.
Hope all's well at Northwind Lodge; and I'm sure I'll be seeing you in 2004.
Best of the fall to you,
Dan
A. You need to use 120 grit
sand paper (preferably with a small orbital/palm sander) to take the shine off the canoe, wipe down
the dust with the 333 thinner (make two passes over the canoe with thinner and clean rags) and roll
on the varnish with a foam roller. Just dummp the varnish on the flat part of canoe and drive
roller thru it. No roller tray needed, same tiwh the 333 brushing thinner. While the varnish is
still wet, drag one of those cheap foam brushes over it to break the bubble and to catch any runs.
If you like you can add a second coat of varnish after the first has cured over night.
Before you start you'll need:
This should do you. Feel free with any other questions you might
have.
