Solo Canoe recommendations
Q.
Looking for a little expert advice in buying a canoe.
I'm looking for a recreational canoe for small rivers and lakes here in Florida.
I'm 63, 170 lbs, small frame. I will be using canoe by self alot, so need lite canoe. Won't be
portaging much, but like that feature.
I noticed you have a Solo with adjustable (moving-rails) rear seat. Is this a seat I could purchase
and install myself?
Do you have a dealer here in Florida? Ely, is to far for me!
Thanks for you advice.
John
A. That adjustable seat is only
available installed from the factory. Unfortunately, we do not have a Florida dealer. We do crate
and ship canoes to the entire US, however. As for a good canoe for you, you might consider
getting a Souris River Quetico 16 tandem and paddling it solo from the front seat looking
backwards. You turn around in the front seat and paddle it backwards. Makes a really nice solo
canoe but when someone else wants to go, you've got a tandem that's ready. In kevlar, this canoe
weighs only about 42 lbs. You would need to put some weight ( bag of water or sand or some
other weight, gear, etc.) in the front to increase your stability and handling in wind. We sell
most of our Quetico 16's with this in mind because the dual-use factor is a real plus for some
folks. If you are interested, I do have one Quetico 16 left in Carbon Tec (same strength as kevlar
only a bit lighter in weight - 40 lbs., and black in color). Our canoe pile is getting quite low
because we'll have "hard water" soon. It's 28 deg. F out right now and it snowed last night.
If you have additional questions, please feel free to email. Thanks!
Joe
